If you take a look at the history of the Olympics and old Olympic records, you will discover that swimming was introduced to the Olympic Games in 1896. It was measured in yards from 1904 at the Olympic Games that were held in St. Louis.

These games didn’t include a ‘mile swim’ but this is because the swimming competitions took place in open water during this time as opposed to

50m swimming pools! As the mid-stages of the 20th century took place, swimming pools were being built in 55 yard distances in the western countries including the United Kingdom, USA and Australia as they were using the imperial system of measurements. 

These pools were created to make swimming races easier to measure and manage as races could then be divided up into half-mile swims (16 lengths) or a full mile swim (32 lengths).

However, in 1965 the Amateur Athletic Union decided to change yard swimming to meter swimming in order to better prepare athletes for the demands of the Olympic Games (which used only 50 meter swimming pools at this point.)  

The USA decided to follow suit and switch to 50 meter pools for long course swimming events and 25 yard pools for short course swimming.

In the modern day, swimming is still split into two seasons, with the longer course swimming typically taking place during the summer months and short course swimming taking place during the winter period. 

Today, the 1500 meter freestyle event is one of the main events of the Olympic Games and after the United States had changed their pools to 50 meters for long course swimming, they needed to ensure that their athletes weren’t at a disadvantage during the short course swimming season when travelling to International events.

For this reason, the 1650 yard freestyle event was created, as this is the closest equivalent distance to the 1500 meter swimming race and incorporated the 25 yard pool measurements for short course swimming.

As such, the Amateur Athletic Union replaced the typically regarded 1760 yard mile swim with a modernised, more convenient version and as more people began to refer to the 1650 yard freestyle as a ‘mile swim’, people’s perceptions began to change, hence why it is widely considered to be a mile swim until this day.

To conclude, a swimming mile is the equivalent of 1650 yards for competitive swimmers and 1760 yards for regular swimmers. Of course, you can switch up between the two measurements if you wish to, irrespective of whether you are a competitive swimmer yourself.
